Ways To Reduce The Risk Of COVID-19 In The Workplace

by | Nov 30, 2020 | Resources

With the ongoing spread of COVID-19 and no real end in sight, many companies are struggling as they operate at reduced capacity. Employees throughout the country are eager to return to work regardless of the risk. This, however, poses another problem for business owners as they must take new measures to adjust their work environment and prevent the spread of COVID-19 among their employees and customers.

The WHO states: “Risk of serious illness rises with age: people over 40 seem to be more vulnerable than those under 40. People with weakened immune systems and people with conditions such as diabetes, heart and lung disease are also more vulnerable to serious illness.” With that being said, it is more important than ever to have procedures and processes in place in order to try and create as safe of a work environment as possible.

Keeping that in mind, we are going to take a look at some things businesses could do to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in the workplace:

Update Health And Safety And Risk Assessments– most workplace health and safety and risk assessment regulations already cover a wide range of possible situations, but COVID-19 is different and requires a different set of rules. Updating your company’s health and safety and risk assessments to include a list of COVID-19 safe measures is important to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

Thorough Cleaning And Sanitisation– have the workplace thoroughly cleaned and sanitised on a regular basis. This will greatly reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Create Work Bubbles Or Pods– many schools have gone to a student pod system where a smaller group of students work together, away from other pods. That way, if one student becomes sick, the pod can be removed from class while the rest of the class remains safe. This can be easily implemented into a workplace environment and, where possible, employees should remain a minimum of 2m apart.

Employees Need To Be Fully Briefed On The COVID Procedures– to ensure that everyone is on the same page and fully understands what needs to be done, all employees should be fully briefed on the COVID procedures. This includes the proper use of a face mask or face shield, hand hygiene, sanitiser use, and what to do if they or anyone within their family have symptoms.
